Case Study: Shaft Repair for Shipyard Propeller

Project Location: Seattle, WA

Our strategy at Morley Machine Tool Alignment is to provide maximum attention to detail, state-of-the-art technology, and quality service in all precision measurement projects. We’re also able to accommodate large scale measurement projects, such as our work with a 47-foot, 50-ton US Navy propeller shaft.

The work was done in conjunction with Precision Engineering for Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle, Washington. The shaft was to be repaired on an 80-foot LeBlond lathe and checked for correct alignment. Two keyways built into the shaft were 180° apart, requiring precise alignment with the milling head for tapering. The shaft was moved to the correct centerline for rotation and verified with the FARO laser tracker.

The repair was a success and the FARO laser tracker was properly positioned on the shaft on the LeBlond lathe bed. Our team takes a problem solving approach to measurement projects, utilizing aerospace-grade standards designed to deliver reliable data and tangible results to our customers.
