Case Study: Gearbox Inspection and Analysis

Project Location: Seattle, WA

At Morley Machine Tool Alignment, we pride ourselves on attention to detail, precise service, and customer satisfaction. Our metrology and inspection equipment has been deployed onsite to a number of industrial locations–from aerospace to job shops–performing tool alignments, precision measurements, repairs, and rebuilds.

The Gear Works, a company based in Seattle, Washington, needed to save time on their machined gearbox inspection process. The job entailed measuring the positions and alignment of the gearbox’s large bores. Typically, this process is done by placing the gearbox on a CNC horizontal boring machine to perform measurements. However, this process would take much longer and had the potential to impede production and scheduling.

The Gear Works contacted us to deploy our FARO laser tracker in order to measure the bore position and alignment tolerances on locations throughout the gearbox. In a matter of hours, the FARO laser tracker was able to precisely map out each bore position, thereby freeing up the CNC boring machine for production.

Our investment in precision technology for metrology helps to provide the best investment for our customer’s projects. Our goal is to achieve preventative and predictive maintenance during or before production, while combining state-of-the-art technology and attention to detail.
